Background of the Study
Family values constitute an essential part of an individual’s moral framework, influencing personal behavior, social interactions, and community dynamics. In Makurdi LGA, Benue State, moral education plays a significant role in reinforcing family values among secondary school students (Chima, 2023). The curriculum is designed to integrate lessons on respect, responsibility, and the importance of familial bonds, aiming to strengthen students’ commitment to family values. Historically, the family has been the primary institution for the transmission of moral values; however, with increasing societal changes and the influence of external media, formal education has emerged as a vital channel for reinforcing these values (Ekwueme, 2024). Recent studies indicate that when students are exposed to a robust moral education program, there is a notable improvement in their adherence to family values, which in turn enhances social cohesion and emotional stability (Okoro, 2023). The pedagogical approaches adopted in Makurdi LGA include classroom discussions, community engagement projects, and experiential learning activities, all of which are aimed at instilling a deep sense of loyalty and responsibility towards the family unit (Chima, 2023). Moreover, the cultural context of Makurdi, characterized by strong communal ties and respect for elders, provides a supportive environment for reinforcing family values through education. Nonetheless, challenges such as rapid modernization, urbanization, and the influence of global media have introduced conflicting value systems that may undermine traditional family values (Ekwueme, 2024). Consequently, this study seeks to critically evaluate how moral education influences students’ commitment to family values, examining both the benefits and limitations of the current educational practices. The findings are expected to inform educators and policymakers about effective strategies for integrating family values into the curriculum, thereby promoting a balanced development of both individual and communal identities (Okoro, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of family values in fostering social stability and personal development, there are concerns that current moral education programs in Makurdi LGA are not sufficiently effective in promoting these values among secondary school students. Preliminary observations suggest that while theoretical knowledge about family values is imparted, the actual commitment to and practice of these values among students remain inconsistent (Chima, 2023). Contributing factors include a lack of practical engagement in family-oriented activities, insufficient teacher training in culturally relevant pedagogies, and external influences from modern lifestyles that often conflict with traditional family norms (Ekwueme, 2024). This discrepancy raises questions about the efficacy of the moral education curriculum in bridging the gap between abstract concepts and lived experiences. Furthermore, the increasing influence of technology and social media exposes students to alternative lifestyles that may dilute their commitment to traditional family values (Okoro, 2023). Educators face challenges in creating a learning environment that effectively integrates family values into daily interactions and decision-making processes. The absence of standardized tools to measure the internalization of family values further complicates efforts to evaluate the success of these educational interventions. Therefore, this study aims to systematically investigate the factors that hinder the full realization of moral education’s potential in reinforcing family values among students. By identifying key obstacles and analyzing current pedagogical practices, the research will offer targeted recommendations for improving curriculum design and teacher training, ultimately ensuring that moral education better supports the development of strong family values in secondary school settings (Chima, 2023).
